Critics mocked the phone for its “sidetalking” ways and dubbed it the “taco phone” in reference to its unusual shape. The phone buttons were not well-suited for gaming, the portrait-style screen wasn’t appropriate for certain genres, and the battery had to be removed in order to change game cartridges! It was also awkward to use as a phone, since the microphone and earpiece were clumsily placed on the edge of the device. The Nokia N-Gage was ahead of its time in many ways, but it stumbled out of the gates when it was released in 2003 and was marred by several poor design choices. The mobile gaming market now generates billions of dollars each year, so the concept of combining a gaming device with a cell phone was certainly not without its merits.
